Have you been diagnosed with gum disease? If so, you may have experienced red, swollen, tender gums and bad breath – or no symptoms at all. Gum disease is a stealthy problem because the symptoms are mild, but this condition is responsible for most adult tooth loss in the US. It has been linked to increased risk for heart attack, stroke, respiratory problems, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, low-weight births, diabetes complications, and other serious health concerns. Fortunately, Dr. Burch and our talented dental hygiene team can restore your oral health and reverse damage with laser dentistry, then work with you to prevent recurrence.
Gum disease occurs when plaque, tartar, and food particles build up on teeth. Bacteria begin to take harbor at the gum line, creating “pockets” that separate teeth and gums. In these warm, dark pockets, the bacteria thrive, growing and causing more damage. Left untreated, gum disease will cause your gums to recede dramatically, bone tissue can deteriorate, and teeth will become loose and, possibly, fall out.
With laser dentistry, Dr. Burch and our hygienists can rid your gums of these harmful bacteria. Our soft tissue laser is minimally invasive and highly accurate. In the absence of bacteria, gums begin to heal and reattach to teeth. In some cases, antibiotic powder or gel helps destroy the bacteria. Badly damaged gum tissue might need to be removed so that new, healthy tissue will regenerate. With laser dentistry, gum surgery requires no stitches, and healing is extraordinarily prompt.
