Neuromuscular Orthodontics

Orthodontic braces can do so much more than straighten teeth to create a more pleasing appearance. While your image is extremely important, Dr. Burch considers whole-mouth harmony and optimal oral function in all situations. If your teeth are not in proper alignment, you may face these more complex problems, like TMJ disorder and teeth grinding (bruxism). It goes both ways... you may need orthodontics to correct TMJ disorder, or you may have TMJ disorder because of malocclusion. Either diagnosis prompts the same conservative and effective solution – neuromuscular orthodontics.

With neuromuscular orthodontics, Dr. Burch can reposition teeth so that your jaw joints are held in proper alignment, which will alleviate associated TMJ pain (headaches, earaches, popping jaws, etc.), as well as bruxism, the resulting tooth wear, and cosmetic flaws. In some cases, patients who formerly wore braces experience tooth movement later in life. This is not uncommon.

Additionally, neurmuscular orthodontics can address facial deformity and breathing issues associated with snoring and sleep apnea.

Here's what Joey Burch said regarding tooth movement after braces on our recent radio broadcast:

Have you ever wanted to know what causes teeth to shift after braces have been removed? Let,s face it, you expected perfectly straight teeth forever after...and instead, you are faced with disappointment, regret, and ultimately, a lifetime of disillusionment every time you look at your smile. The real question is, what are the underlying forces that have overpowered the aesthetic placement of the teeth? Simply put, it's all about teeth that are pulled in a tug-of-war between the muscles and force loads of surrounding teeth, instead of realigning them in harmony with surrounding structures.

Like dominos, you are either set up for success or set up for a cascade of events that could ultimately get progressively worse over time. Shifting of the teeth is just a symptom. Many patients who had braces years ago are the neuromuscular patients we treat today. They have faces that are prematurely aging. Their teeth are sensitive and notched at the gum lines. Their tongue, collapsed soft palate, and narrow airway can cause snoring and a decrease in oxygen that can increase blood pressure and rob them of vitality and make them feel old before their years, or worse yet, could lead to an unnecessary premature death.
